Originally slated for an October release this year, Irrational Games’ Ken Levine announced today that Bioshock Infinite has been delayed until February 26th 2013. Levine released the following statement: When we announced the release date of BioShock Infinite in March, we felt pretty good about the timing. Since then, we’ve come to realise that some specific tweaks and improvements will make Infinite into something even more extraordinary. Therefore, to give our talented team the time they need, we’ve decided to move the game’s release to February 26th, 2013. We wanted to let our loyal and very patient fans know this as soon as possible. I won’t kid you: BioShock Infinite is a very big game, and we’re doing things that no one has ever done in a first-person shooter. So, that sucks huh? At least they’re giving themselves enough time to polish it up, I’d prefer that instead of them rushing it for release. Thoughts?

When you move to a new town, city or country it can be difficult to get into the music scene in your new locale. The task of finding out about all these new music websites, blogs, magazines, street press, venues and bands can be daunting, and depending on how enthusiastically you throw yourself into the task, completely exhausting. Moving to London I expected the vibrant music scene to obligingly present itself to me on a platter, jauntily decorated with union jacks, bunting and portraits of Princess Diana. Unfortunately it took a little more effort on my part to discover the multitude of bands, venues and events that London had to offer. There was no free weekly street press, which initially threw me – how is a person expected to keep up with who is touring and when? – fortunately I discovered a great website called Songkick where I could track my favourite bands and receive emails when tours were announced. Festivals featuring local music were a good way to discover new bands, but in retrospect a lot of them who were hyped in the music press at the time were never heard from again, and with Peaches Geldof lurking around preying on naive young lead singers with androgynous features, it seemed that being in a band in London was a dangerous occupation. Pop-wise, the dominant music trend was dubbed the ‘New Boring’ or the ‘Beige Wave’, exemplified by music from Adele, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran dominating the charts, awards and shopping malls across the land. Apparently the only people still buying records were adverse to music that could be described using adjectives any stronger than ‘pleasant’ or ‘nice’. Of course the term had its detractors, infamous music journalist and blogger, Everett True, rightly pointed out that lots of great popular music was being released that defied the New Boring categorisation, you just might not find it being played on mainstream radio, being covered on talent search programmes or providing gravitas for TV documentaries. Albums released by UK acts like SBTRKT, PJ Harvey and Ghostpoet all proved that the last 18 months wasn’t a complete bore-fest. But it cannot be ignored that in 2011 Adele dominated the media and the popular imagination so heavily that when people of the future look back they will assume Adele must’ve been the eternal supreme leader of the world or something, rather than a pop-star who happened to sell a gazillion records. But now it is 2012, I’m back in Australia and have returned to discover that Gotye is world-famous, The Jezebels have become Australia-famous and Catcall is finally releasing an album (yay!). Some venues have closed down, but others have opened up. Some old TV singing programmes have faded into obscurity, but new ones have become ratings phenomenons. And, most importantly of all, Molly Meldrum is alive and well! I suppose it will take me some time to get properly up to speed on all of the new bands, venues, festivals and such that...

It was announced yesterday that Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s long delayed Cabin In The Woods will not be getting a theatrical release here as originally thought. Roadshow made the following statement - We’re very sorry to confirm that Cabin In The Woods will not be getting an Australian cinema release. Many of you have been asking for reconsideration, but unfortunately CITW won’t be released in Australian cinemas, and will be released straight to DVD instead. We know that this confirmation is disappointing news, but hopefully this means you’ll be able to see it on DVD sooner than originally scheduled. While I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to see it on the big screen, at least we’ll all be able to watch it in the comfort of our homes much sooner than we would have if it had made it to theatres.

Joss Whedon is my idol, I feel like this is something that you should know before reading my review. You may also like to know that I’m a big fan of Marvel comics as well as all of their movies up until this point – Well, except for The Incredible Hulk; I much prefer Ang Lee’s Hulk due to its darker and more meaningful tone. So going into The Avengers I must admit that I was quite excited to see this series of movies finally get their big crossover, a venture that has cost Marvel billions of dollars and if it wasn’t any good the blame would have been squarely aimed at Mr. Whedon. That must have been a huge burden to carry, especially for a guy that’s mainly known for TV. While I admire Whedon and have faith in his abilities as a writer/director, giving him the job of directing their biggest film was a huge gamble on Marvel’s part, but thank god they took the chance because I don’t know how anybody else would have made an Avengers movie as funny, exciting, heartfelt and engaging as the one Whedon has crafted. The Avengers doesn’t just live up to the hype, it surpasses the hype, effortlessly. Of course, with an ensemble as big as this one it was going to be a tricky task to give each hero their own time to shine without one character becoming more prominent than the others. Steve Rogers takes up the mantle as leader, Tony Stark is his usual witty likeable self, Thor is just as godly as ever and Banner is quiet and reserved until “The other guy” comes out, but no one ever feels out of place, underutilised or overbearing, at least when it comes to those four. Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Clark Gregg as Nick Fury, Hawkeye and Agent Coulson respectively, all get their own moments to shine and each moment is memorable. Scarlett Johannson has a much bigger role as Black Widow compared to her stint in Iron Man 2. Don’t get me wrong, that one scene in IM2 when she beat up all those guys was excellent, but she gets many more moments in The Avengers. The only character I think that got the short end of the stick was Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. She has very little to do in the film and as the only character that’s never appeared in any other Marvel film up until this point, I would have liked to learn more about her and I especially would have liked to see more expansion on her and Fury’s relationship. Each actor brings everything they can to their respective roles and seeing each returning character back on the big screen is a real treat. The main plot of the film sees Loki coming to earth with an army in the hopes of taking over as ruler of the planet. There’s no huge plot twists or big mind blowing revelations, it’s a straight up...

No solid details are known yet, beyond it being developed for the PS3, but from the trailer it would seem that this game is going all the way back to the beginning, before God of War: Chains of Olympus. The official reveal of the game was supposed to happen tomorrow, whether we’ll learn more about it then remains to be seen. I for one am looking forward to gutting some more Centaurs, how about you?

I love stop-motion animation. It’s a unique art form that I’ve always been impressed by ever since I was a kid and I’ve attempted to make my own stop-motion animation numerous times. Aardman Studios have been at the forefront of Stop-Motion since the 80′s, with Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run being their highest profile creations. They made a foray into CG animation with Flushed Away a few years ago, but their latest film combines CG and Stop-Motion to great effect. That effect, however, comes at the cost of entertainment. The Pirates! Band of Misfits isn’t Aardman’s worst film – I’m not a fan of Flushed Away – but it’s far from their best. Pirates! tells the story of Pirate Captain and his crew as they attempt to win ‘Pirate Of The Year’, a trophy awarded to the pirate who plunders the most booty that year. They’re never won before because they’re actually terrible pirates and they’re the laughing stock of the entire pirate world, but Pirate Captain aims to change that. I feel like I should stop here with the plot synopsis because I didn’t know anything about the plot of the film going in and I was surprised by the appearance of major historical figures that propel the plot forward, and I feel like those surprises will add to your enjoyment of the film, and you’ll need to wring all the enjoyment you can out of this one. Aardman’s humour is generally very subtle, they aren’t known for making a bunch of pop cultural references aimed at the kiddies. Flushed Away had a bunch of pop-cultural jokes and I hated it. While Pirates! isn’t as flooded with them as that film was, they do pop up and they’re more annoying here due to the fact that the film is set in historical England. The subtle humour is present but most of it falls flat, especially in the first half of the film when it really should have been the best because it’s during this half that nothing happens. We learn that these Pirates aren’t very good at pirating and the Pirate Captain wants to win that award but there’s nothing else to it, resulting in 40 minutes of dullness that I didn’t enjoy. I laughed twice, maybe. Once the film picks up speed in the second half it becomes a little more enjoyable. It turns into an action movie mostly, finishing with a battle on the high seas. It’s still not hilariously funny, but at least it’s fun to watch and there’s less chance of falling asleep. The animation is great, most of it is stop motion but the water is all CG because animating that much water isn’t possible in stop-motion. The voice acting is great all around, if I didn’t know Hugh Grant had voiced the Pirate Captain going in I wouldn’t have been able to pick it, this is probably his best performance ever because he’s not playing Hugh Grant for once. Jeremy Piven is good as...
