Weekend Round-Up: Sunday 29th May 2011

MOVIES

  • The first trailer for David Fincher’s adaptation of the novel The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has leaked online thanks to some dude who took his camera to the movie theatre. The trailer tells you nothing about the movie and it never lingers on one shot more than a few seconds, and I like that, but I’ve seen the original movie and know what’s going to happen already. The addition of a Karen O/Trent Reznor/Led Zepplin combo is pretty sweet too. It’s a Red Band trailer, so you might want to cover your screen a bit if you’re watching at work. Side boob!

  • Grease star Jeff Conaway passed away this week at age 60. There are conflicting reports about what actually killed the one time Kenickie – either an overdose of painkillers or from pneumonia – but two weeks ago the star fell into a coma. It was decided on Thursday to take him off life support and he then passed away on Friday. Conaway also played one of the Gogan boys in Pete’s Dragon, which I only just discovered. I loved that movie as a kid, so I might have to go and watch it again.
  • David O. Russell is no longer on board to direct the Uncharted movie, due to “creative differences.” I’m sure those “differences” had to do with the fact that Russell was supposed to be making a movie called Uncharted, about a wise-cracking adventurer who scours the globe for lost lands and ancient artefacts, but he thought he was making a movie called ‘Adventure Family’s Art Heist World Adventure’, about Marky Mark and his family of ex-gangster art thieves who go around the world stealing art… or something. Good riddance! Now let’s get a director who actually cares about the source material and hire Nathan Fillion to play Drake… or how about Nolan North? I’ve heard him do a pretty good Drake impression.
  • In other Game-turned-movie news, Capcom announced this week that Takashi Miike is directing the Phoenix Wright movie. I’m thinking this is just about the strangest pairing of director to material I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait to see Phoenix shout OBJECTION! while he suspends the Judge from hooks and tortures him.
  • In “This is the worst news ever” news, they’re making a sequel to Yogi bear and the script has been written already. Good things come in bears twice, I suppose.

GAMES

  • E3′s a little over a week away and we’ll be writing all about it here on the site, but due to the show being so close, there isn’t a whole lot of gaming news this week apart from the announcement that House of the Dead: Overkill is being ported to the PS3 with Move support. So that’s exciting.

MUSIC

  • Silverchair broke up. If you don’t have all their albums already then go out and get them cause they’re all amazing… apart from Young Modern, I’ll allow you to skip that one.
  • In “This is also the worst news ever” news, Charlie Sheen, Snoop Dogg and Korn Guitarist Rob Patterson have teamed up to produce some kind of noise that you’ll be able to purchase. The song is called Winning (of course) and you can listen to it below. It’s bad, maybe intentionally, but it’s better than most of Snoop’s latest music. Proceeds from the sale of the single go towards helping the victims of the US Tornados.
